Governor O'Malley Congratulates 83 Maryland Schools for Ranking in Newsweek's Top 1500 U.S. High Schools
ANNAPOLIS, MD (June 12, 2009) – Governor Martin O’Malley and Maryland State Department of Education Superintendent Nancy Grasmick today issued the following statement congratulating 83 Maryland schools that made Newsweek’s Top 1500 U.S. High Schools, which was released earlier this week.
“I want to congratulate all of the educators, principals, Superintendents, and especially the students who, in response to the increased investments made by all Marylanders, continue to achieve at unprecedented levels.”
“This is tremendous news for the State of Maryland. We have the best public schools in America and it’s not just because Education Week ranked Maryland Number one this past January - it is because our test scores are up in every county, in every grade, in every subject and across every single demographic line. White students, black students, high income and low income students of all ages are all testing higher today than they did five years ago.”
“Now is more important than ever, even in these difficult times, to continue to protect our investments in public education to ensure that every child receives a world class education and a better future. The people of Maryland are our greatest asset and our continued economic strength depends upon our ability to invest in them, and prepare our children today for the jobs of tomorrow.”
State Superintendent of Schools Nancy S. Grasmick said:
“The Maryland State Department of Education has been working closely with our school systems to bring educational excellence to all parts of our state. Working in tandem with the College Board, we have brought numerous Advanced Placement courses to schools in rural and urban communities that had few offerings in the past. The result has been that more students from historically underrepresented student groups are involved in AP. Maryland, as a state, ranks first in the nation in terms of the percentage of students who take AP tests and score at the college mastery level.”
“This new research from Newsweek shows that we are making a difference. Educators are inspiring our students to do more, and our students are responding. Time and time again we see that our students will rise to meet the high expectations that are set forth for them.”
