Statement from Governor O'Malley on Keeping the Preakness in Maryland

ANNAPOLIS, MD (October 13, 2009) –Governor Martin O’Malley issued the following statement today related to the bankruptcy of the Magna Entertainment Corporation and the assets to be auctioned as part of its bankruptcy.  Magna has announced it will not consider bid proposals that would move the Preakness Stakes outside of Maryland.

“I am pleased that Magna recognizes the importance of keeping the Preakness here in Maryland, where it belongs and has been for over 100 years.   Maryland has a rich tradition of horse racing and horse breeding, and these industries generate thousands of jobs and millions of dollars for the local economy.”
