April 3, 2007
Mr. Watkins: Good morning, everyone. I’m Tom Watkins, President and CEO of Human Genome Sciences. We’re delighted to have Governor O’Malley with us today, County Executive Ike Leggett.
I thought what we’d do, if we could, is just quickly go around the room and introduce ourselves. We’ve got senior executives from HGS here, but also a number of our biotech and life sciences colleagues from other companies. So if I could start there, to the County Executive’s left.
Mr. Diamond: Bob Diamond, with Montgomery County’s Department of Economic Development. I lead the Marketing and Business Planning Section.
Ms. Shaab: Good morning, Jane Shaab with the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the All State Systems Academic Medical Center in Baltimore City and the UMB BioPark in East Baltimore.
Mr. Stump: David Stump, I’m the head of Research and Development at HGS.
Mr. Labinger: Gary Labinger, I’m Chief Commercial Officer, HGS.
Ms. Ellis: I am Christina Ellis with the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development, I’m the Public Information Officer.
Mr. Barabe: Tim Barabe, Chief Financial Officer, HGS.
Ms. Bates-McKay: Susan Bates McKay (phonetic), and I head Human Resources at HGS.
Mr. Walsh: John Walsh (phonetic), Deputy Executive Director for Tedco.
Mr. Davis: Jim Davis, General Counsel, HGS.

Ms. Coons: Julie Coons, CEO of the Tech Council of Maryland, MD BIO.
Mr. Harnett: Good morning. Joe Harnett, President and CEO of Innovative Bioscience for Rapid Diagnostics, a bio-defense company in the area.
Mr. Bende: I’m Steve Bende, I’m the President and CEO of Bacilligen, we’re an early stage Bio-tech company, we’re in the MTDC, the Maryland Technology and Development Center, just across the street, an incubator company, and we do cancer and infectious disease therapeutics and vaccines.
Ms. Sevaroe: Gina Sevaroe (phonetic), President and CEO of ENG Pharmaceutical in Columbia, Maryland. We do breast cancer diagnosis and therapeutic developments. And we are one of the Maryland (inaudible) companies.
Lt. Governor Brown: I’m Anthony Brown, your Lieutenant Governor. I’m proud and pleased that the Governor has asked me to devote a considerable amount of my time in the area of economic development. I look forward to working for the Governor and with the Secretary and with each and every one of you as we promote and advance the life sciences and biotech industry here in Maryland.
Governor O’Malley: My name is Martin O’Malley, I’m a native of Montgomery County, went to grade school right over there at Lakewood Elementary. I’m familiar with the neighborhood, but I want to become even more familiar with the terrific work that all of you are doing in life sciences and bio-terror defense and all of those things that our State is so well equipped to lead the nation in.
And I really appreciate Mr. Watkins here accommodating our visit here at Human Genome and appreciate what you do for our State and for creating opportunities for this generation and the next.
We’re here today to celebrate, if you will, the passage in both the House and the Senate of our Life Sciences Advisory Board, which was one of the top priorities in this legislative session, introduced by the O’Malley/Brown administration. It had bipartisan support and it passed both houses with bipartisan support.
And will give to us an entity that will develop a strategic plan for moving life sciences forward, for making Maryland even more attractive to the smart Phds and talented people who want to relocate to Maryland and also will create more jobs for the children of Marylanders who are already here.
