Take the Pledge

By Katie O’Malley

The safety of our children needs to be a top priority always. And while many people may think that bullying is just kids being kids, in our State, we won’t accept abuse in any form. We know how much bullying can affect a child’s ability to learn and we’ve all seen the headlines of children tragically taking their own lives because of the abuse.

That’s why I was so proud to join with Martin, representatives from Facebook and Time Warner’s Cartoon Network and hundreds of students, educators and parents last week to kick off National Bullying Prevention Month and to take the “Stop Bullying, Speak Up” pledge. We hope you’ll take the pledge too.

The best ways to combat bullying are to raise awareness, speak up and intervene if you see it happening. That’s why Martin and I are encouraging Marylanders in every part of our State to sit down at the computer to take the pledge at 7pm tonight. We’re hoping that after that time, we’ll see a big spike in the number of Marylanders taking the pledge and send a big message that Maryland speaks up against bullying.

It’s so easy to take. All you need to do is visit www.facebook.com/StopBullyingSpeakUp. If you’re still not convinced, watch this video from the kick-off to see just how easy it is!

The pledge is a great way to teach our kids about bullying. And as parents, when we’re more involved in our kids’ lives and we know what’s going on at their schools, we’re more likely to be able to recognize bullying when it happens and to help put an end to it.

I hope you’ll join us and take the pledge with your children. We have the power as a community to come together and speak up against bullying.

Thank you for helping protect the safety of Maryland’s kids.
