One of the most important choices that we can make in these times is to be more engaged in the global economy. That’s why after our first successful trade mission to China, Vietnam and South Korea last summer, we brought our jobs mission to India this past fall. This week, we hosted a delegation of business leaders from India in Baltimore to continue the conversation on how we can create jobs here at home and expand opportunity for Maryland businesses through effective partnerships.
There’s one big reason we’re expanding our relationships abroad: they create jobs here at home.
Our first trade mission to Asia immediately brought back $85 million in foreign direct investment and business deals for Maryland companies. Our second mission to India brought back $60 million. And these are just the initial impacts. These trips formed new partnerships for our universities, encouraged Indian businesses to invest in Maryland and most importantly, they helped our businesses find new opportunities so that they can expand and create new jobs here at home.

In a very universal way, all of us are fighting to create a better future for our children and grandchildren. That better future does not happen by itself. Progress is a choice; job creation is a choice. Together, in Maryland, by strengthening our ties abroad, we’re making the right choices to transform the global challenges of today into the jobs and opportunities of tomorrow. I look forward to more missions in the future.
