Statement from Governor Martin O’Malley on the US Department of Labor’s Guidance on ‘Warn’ Notices

July 31st, 2012

ANNAPOLIS, MD  – Governor Martin O’Malley today released the following statement on yesterday’s guidance by the U.S. Department of Labor on the relevance of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act to possible layoffs of federal contractors:

“The Labor Department’s advice that the law does not require the mailing of WARN notices as Congress deliberates a more balanced way to avoid sequester, is good news for Maryland businesses and their employees who do important defense-related jobs in our State.

“Surely Congress can and must find the consensus necessary to provide for the Common Defense of our nation with a more balanced approach.

“The investments we make as a people to safeguard our national security are critically important to the well-being of our country and to the economic recovery of our entire Chesapeake Region of Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.”
