On 18 January 2011, the Joint Legislative Committee on BRAC held their annual meeting.  Presentations (available on http://www.brac.maryland.gov/) were given by:

Asuntha Chiang-Smith, Executive Director, BRAC Subcabinet
Colonel Daniel Thomas, Installation Commander, Fort Meade
Major General Nick Justice, Commanding General, Aberdeen Proving Ground
Karen Holt, BRAC Manager, Chesapeake Science and Security Corridor
Bernard Michel, President, Army Alliance, Inc

Presenters provided legislators updates on: BRAC activities on their posts, BRAC impacts on their communities and business, and the achievements made by the Subcabinet in the past year.  Continuing challenges and emphasis for the last year of BRAC implementation were also expressed to the committee members.

After each presentation, committee members were provided the opportunity to ask questions.  Areas of particular interest, by the committee members, were – higher education needs of the incoming workforce, transportation infrastructure needs around the BRAC impacted installations, and inclusion of financial literacy information in workforce development plans.

The next meeting Maryland State Joint Legislative Committee on Base Realignment and Closure will be held on 18 January 2011, at 11:00 am, in the Joint Hearing Room in the Legislative Services Building.  The subject for the meeting will be: Update on the status of Base Realignment and Closure preparation efforts.
