LT. GOVERNOR BROWN AND MHEC ANNOUNCE NEW HIGHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND REGION

Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown and the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) announced seven degree programs and two courses to support the educational needs of Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG).  The programs, which will be administered by Maryland two and four-year higher education institutions, will cover a range of focus areas needed to support additional military missions coming to APG as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) transition.

The selection process involved a collaborative effort between the military, private sector, higher education community and state government to ensure that the needs of Northeast Maryland’s innovation workforce are met.  An independent panel recommended programs and courses that will be offered by institutions from across the state, including two that will be administered by the University of Maryland, College Park; two by Towson University; two by Morgan State University; and one each by Johns Hopkins University, Cecil College, and the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

“Governor O’Malley and I are committed to fully supporting Aberdeen Proving Ground’s unique missions, which are critical to our nation’s security and to Maryland’s economy,” said Lt. Governor Brown. “These new higher education programs, developed in partnership with military leadership, state government, and the higher education community, will help maintain and enhance the skills of the Aberdeen Proving Ground region’s workforce in order to support the thousands of BRAC-related jobs coming to the area and to retain these positions for years to come.”

“Maryland’s higher education community is ready, willing, and able to meet the needs of the Aberdeen Proving Ground region, and these programs and courses highlight the responsiveness of our State’s educational institutions,” said MHEC Secretary Elizabeth Sachs.

The programs will help support over 8,800 direct jobs and thousands of indirect positions coming to the Aberdeen Proving Ground region as part of the BRAC process.  APG officials will work directly with the recommended schools to finalize implementation of the programs and a final review of each program will be conducted by MHEC.  Programs may begin as early as this fall.
