First Lady Katie O'Malley Unveils Habitat for Humanity Home

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 14, 2008) – Tomorrow, First Lady Katie O’Malley will attend the dedication of a newly completed house on North Washington St. and watch as Wendy and Gary Nelson receive the keys to their new home. The renovation project was part of First Families Building Homes Across America, a two-year program of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program.  First Lady O’Malley teamed up with Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity and helped kick off the construction of the home in October of last year.

“I was so happy to be here when the work on this house began and am thrilled to see the finished product—created by the skills, talents and hands of so many female volunteers,” said Judge O’Malley. “It’s a pleasure to see the Nelson family have the home of their dreams.”

Launched in May 2006, the First Families program is a two-year initiative of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program that has brought together governors’ spouses and other local and state-wide leaders to swing hammers with Habitat and women volunteers to construct new homes with a family in need in every U.S. state and the District of Columbia.

All homes built as part of the First Families program are Habitat Women Build homes. This is the sixth Women Build project taken on by Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity in Baltimore City and will add to the more than 1,000 Habitat for Humanity houses built by women crews throughout the country. Women Build, underwritten nationally by Lowe’s, brings women from all walks of life together to learn construction skills and to use those skills to help move families out of poverty.

Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing organization that works in partnership with people in need to build safe, decent and housing selling them at no profit through no-interest loans.   Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity has rehabilitated a total of 126 houses in Baltimore City. Current focus areas include Washington Village/Pigtown and East Baltimore.
