Governor O’Malley’s National Leadership Positions on Homeland Security

Governor Martin O’Malley considers public safety one of the most sacred and important responsibilities shared by those in public service. In the 10 years since September 11, 2001, Governor O’Malley has consistently been recognized by his peers and independent experts as a national leader on homeland security and public safety issues. He has lead national homeland security efforts as an advocate, exemplar of best practices, advisor to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and collaborator with renowned security and preparedness experts.

  • As mayor of Baltimore, O’Malley was selected by his fellow mayors to co-chair the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ homeland security efforts, via the Homeland Security Task Force
  • As Governor of Maryland, O’Malley was selected by his fellow governors to co-chair the National Governors Association’s homeland security efforts, via the Special Committee on Homeland Security and Public Safety
  • Governor O’Malley was selected by Secretary Janet Napolitano, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to serve as one of her key external advisors as a member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC)
