Lt. Governor Brown Announces Additional BRAC Zones

Brown designates BRAC Zones in Aberdeen and Howard County

Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown, joined by Aberdeen Mayor Michael Bennett and Howard County Councilwoman Jennifer Terrasa, announced new BRAC Zones as part of the state’s ongoing efforts to prepare for the job and population growth expected to come to Maryland due to Base Realignment and Closure. Brown, the Chair of the Governor’s Subcabinet on BRAC, designated two BRAC Zones in the City of Aberdeen and Howard County.

2009 Legislative Accomplishments

  • Included Maryland as a member of the interstate compact which enables states to collaborate to ensure that the various educational needs of military children are met while they are transferring between school districts and states.
  • Extended the 10-year life of a BRAC Zone and the amount of time local jurisdictions have to designate properties as BRAC Zone eligible.
  • Funded $1 million for MHEC BRAC Higher Education Grants, distributed to state universities and colleges.
  • Provided the basis for waiving examination requirements for stationary engineers, plumbers, gas fitters and HVACR contractors who are relocating to Maryland and are already licensed under similar requirements in another state.
