Most Distinguished Leader of the Year for Minority Business

Lt. Governor Brown was recently honored for his on-going efforts to support minority and women-owned businesses throughout Maryland at MWMCA’s 9th Annual Spring Breakfast and Business Showcase Expo, where he received the 2012 Distinguished Leader of the Year for Minority Business award.

“Governor O'Malley and I have made a commitment to strengthening and growing our middle class and to expanding opportunity to all Marylanders,” said Lt. Governor Brown. “Investing in Maryland's small and minority-owned businesses is critical to keeping that promise. These investments not only support our working families and create jobs, but they build a stronger, more diverse economy.  I'm honored to accept this award on behalf of the entire O'Malley-Brown Administration and all who are working diligently to support Maryland’s minority business community.”

Through innovative initiatives like Maryland’s MBE University Program, Lt. Governor Brown has traveled across the state to provide Maryland’s minority and women-owned businesses with vital information and resources to successfully grow, and create new jobs in their communities.

Accomplishments

  • Maryland is ranked #1 in entrepreneurship and innovation by the US Chamber of Commerce
  • Achieved 25% Minority Business Enterprise participation statewide-the highest ever attained
  • Protected BRAC Zone Investments that are supporting over 23,000 military and defense-related jobs in Maryland

Lt. Governor Brown recently toured the downtown business district of Cambridge to highlight the City’s successful revitalization efforts completed in part with the help of state funding. See photos here:

"As the official BRAC process comes to an end, our hard work goes on.  We must continue our efforts to improve our infrastructure and ensure a workforce pipeline in order to maximize and sustain the benefits of BRAC for years to come.”
