State signs Memorandum of Understanding with the American Red Cross on Disaster Preparedness

ANNAPOLIS (MARCH 23, 2007) - As part of a national effort to recognize the hard work and dedication of American Red Cross Volunteers around the world, Governor Martin O’Malley proclaimed today American Red Cross Day in Annapolis. Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown presented the proclamation to Kathy Olson, a Red Cross Service Area leader.

“The American Red Cross is in the business of saving lives,” said Lt. Governor Brown. “Our donations need to reflect that diversity and our civil obligation to give blood. I am honored to proclaim today to be the first American Red Cross Day in Annapolis.”

Lt. Governor BrownIn addition, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the State of Maryland and the American Red Cross on disaster preparedness. Thirty-four states have entered into this Memorandum of Understanding, which, in this post-Katrina environment, better prepares both the State and the American Red Cross to work in tandem in rendering assistance and service to victims of disaster.

“We must be prepared to do what is most needed by our citizens in times of disaster,” Lt. Governor Brown said. “This partnership with the American Red Cross helps to ensure the safety and health of Marylanders in time of disaster.”
