PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD (August 9, 2007) – Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown today met with students and administrators at Prince George’s Community College after presenting a check for $971,000 to Prince George’s Community College President Charlene Dukes for planned structural improvements on the campus.
At the press conference at Prince George’s Community College, Lt. Governor Brown emphasized the role that Maryland’s community colleges will play in workforce creation, especially in building a trained workforce to fill BRAC-related jobs. During this year’s General Assembly session, the O’Malley/Brown administration successfully passed a budget that included a 17 percent increase for community colleges.
“I can think of no better crossroads of economic development and workforce creation than Maryland’s Community Colleges,” said Lt. Governor Brown. “Institutions like Prince George’s Community College will create a new generation of highly-skilled, professionally-trained employees who will fill many of the well-paying jobs coming to Prince George’s County and Maryland as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure decisions.”
Earlier in the day, Lt. Governor Brown participated in a hardhat tour of the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center at National Harbor. The National Harbor project is the State’s largest construction venture and, upon completion, will bring more than 7.3 million square feet of mixed-use development, including, 4,000 hotel rooms, 2,500 residential units, 500,000 square feet of ‘Class A’ office space, and 1 million square feet of retail, dining and entertainment space.
He also met with doctors, nurses, union representatives and administrators at Prince George’s Hospital. Following the meeting, Lt. Governor Brown was given a tour of the hospital’s medical facilities and was briefed on its various needs.
“Today’s meeting with hospital staff and administration and the tour of the facility clearly defines the need for a long-term solution that will create a world-class health care system in Prince George’s County,” Lt. Governor Brown said.
Lt. Governor Brown attended a lunch with community leaders to discuss various community issues and concerns. The list of invited leaders included civic association officials and municipal leaders.
Lt. Governor Brown represented Prince George’s County in the Maryland General Assembly for eight years before being elected Lt. Governor. He is also a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Prince George’s Community College.
