BALTIMORE, MD (September 12, 2007) – Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown received the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Region of the American Red Cross 2007 Dignitary of the Year Award during a ceremony today. The award is in recognition of Lt. Governor Brown’s commitment to the Red Cross’s mission and his advocacy for blood donation.
“It is a great honor to accept the American Red Cross Dignitary of the Year Award. I cannot think of many other organizations that do promote the common good as well as the Red Cross,” Lt. Governor Brown said. “Today’s ceremony is a wonderful celebration of the good work of hundreds of staff and volunteers, but it is also a reminder that we still face a critical blood shortage in Maryland. A blood donation won’t cost a dime but it could be the most valuable gift that any of us will ever give.”
Past recipients of the Dignitary of the Year Award include former Baltimore City Council President and current Mayor Sheila Dixon and Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings.
“The support of respected local leaders like Lt. Governor Anthony Brown is critical to helping us accomplish our mission,” said Gary J. Ouellette, CEO for the Greater Chesapeake and Potomac Region. “Each time Lt. Governor Brown speaks on our behalf, his personal dedication to the cause of blood donation is apparent. It is this kind of enthusiasm from our leaders that inspires and motivates citizens to donate blood. As a public figure, Lt. Governor Brown is doing his part to maintain a safe and adequate community blood supply.”
The American Red Cross is asking all eligible donors to help replenish the blood supply by calling 1-800-GIVE LIFE today to schedule a blood donation appointment. Walk-ins are accepted at Red Cross donor centers, and appointments are encouraged.
