Statement from Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown Congratulating Maryland Congressional Delegation's Work to Secure Federal Support for BRAC Transportation Projects

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 11, 2009) – Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown released the following statement today congratulating the Maryland Congressional Delegation:

“I applaud Sen. Mikulski and the rest of Team Maryland for fighting to secure nearly $57 million of federal funding for BRAC transportation projects. BRAC presents incredible opportunities, including 60,000 jobs. But it also presents challenges, most notably preparing the infrastructure to accommodate incoming population around several of our military installations. Governor O’Malley and I have worked closely with our Congressional delegation to ensure that Maryland receives its fair share of federal support so that we can fulfill our enhanced responsibility to the nation’s security.”

Congress passed the 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Bill last night. The bill includes $56.7 million for BRAC-related transportation projects in Maryland, including:

  • $34.7 million for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to purchase new rail cars;
  • $13 million for Maryland’s MARC Commuter Rail System;
  • $3 million for intersection improvements along Rockville Pike/Wisconsin Avenue near National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda;
  • $3 million to improve access to Fort Meade in Anne Arundel County; and
  • $3 million for intersection improvements along highways leading to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford County.

In 2007, Governor Martin O’Malley and the Maryland General Assembly created the Subcabinet on Base Realignment and Closure. The Subcabinet, comprised of 10 Cabinet secretaries from agencies most directly assisting with BRAC efforts, is chaired by Lt. Governor Brown.
