Statement from Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown on President Barack Obama's Speech at the NAACP Centennial Celebration
ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 17, 2009) – Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown today released the following statement applauding President Obama’s speech during the Centennial Celebration for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People:
“Last night, President Obama delivered an important address commemorating the 100th anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. President Obama touched on the progress we’ve made over the years. But he spoke in greater detail about the work that’s still undone. I applaud President Obama for shining a light on the stubborn performance gaps in our public school systems that leave too many children of color behind, and I commend his commitment to working with all stakeholders to improve public education for every American child.
“Governor O’Malley and I share President Obama’s determination to improve public education. Since taking office, we have increased funding for K-12 education every year. Despite tough economic times, we understand the importance of protecting our investment in K-12 education. Because of that investment, we have seen test scores go up in every county, in every grade, in every subject and across every demographic line. As President Obama said, however, ‘our work is not over.’ We will protect our commitment to public education so every child in every neighborhood has the same shot at success.”
