Lt. Governor Brown to Welcome Nation's Lieutenant Governors for Annual Meeting of National Lieutenant Governors Association

ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 24, 2009) – Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will host colleagues from across the country next week as the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) convenes its annual summer meeting in Baltimore and Annapolis. Brown and lieutenant governors, secretaries of state and other public officials first in the line of gubernatorial succession will spend the week sharing ideas and best practices. Brown currently serves as the treasurer of NLGA. The meeting will run from Wednesday, July 29 through Friday, July 31.

“I am excited to welcome my friends and colleagues from across the country to Maryland for the NLGA meeting,” Lt. Governor Brown said. “During difficult economic times, these meetings are an important opportunity to discuss timely issues and share ideas, best practices, and proven strategies that protect our shared priorities.”

“I want to welcome the NLGA members to the great State of Maryland, and commend Lt. Governor Anthony Brown for his leadership in bringing this year’s conference to our State,” said Governor O’Malley. “Through these tough times, Lt. Governor Brown has provided exactly the type of guidance and support for our Administration that has helped us weather this economic storm, and it is that leadership that the NLGA counts on him for as Treasurer. I look forward to meeting the other lieutenant governors from around the nation and wish them well for their conference.”

Meeting attendees will have the opportunity to hear from members of the Obama-Biden administration, policy experts, former governors and others on a range of issues. Notable panels and speeches scheduled during the meeting include:

  • Cecilia Rouse, a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors, NLGA Keynote Address – The Economics of Education (Wednesday, 12:45 PM);
  • Panel discussion on Health Care Reform featuring former NLGA member and former Chair of the Democratic National Committee Howard Dean and Dr. Douglas Holtz Eakin, economic advisor to President George W. Bush and former Director of the Congressional Budget Office (Thursday, 1:30 PM); and
  • A StateStat demonstration led by Lt. Governor Anthony Brown (Friday, 10:30 AM).

In between meetings and panels, lieutenant governors will have the opportunity to tour downtown Baltimore and historic Annapolis. Lt. Governor Brown will host a welcoming banquet for all attendees at the U.S. Naval Academy on Wednesday evening. The next afternoon, former Congresswoman Helen Bentley and officials from the Maryland Port Authority will lead attendees on a tour of the Port of Baltimore – one of the largest and most active ports on the eastern seaboard. The week of meetings will conclude Friday evening as attendees visit Oriole Park at Camden Yards for the Orioles vs. Red Sox game. Prior to the game, Lt. Governor Brown will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The NLGA meeting is funded completely through private sponsors and contributions and will not cost Maryland taxpayers anything. NLGA officials estimate the meeting will generate $487,000 in Maryland’s economy – a $4.87 return on every dollar invested in the meeting.

“Lt. Governor Brown has provided dual leadership this year as Host and NLGA Treasurer. He is planning an exceptional showcase of Maryland’s assets which can teach lessons to other states about port leadership, government accountability through StateStat, and sustainable growth through transit-oriented development,” said Julia Hurst, NLGA Executive Director.
