Statement from Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown on the Passing of Senator Edward M. Kennedy
ANNAPOLIS, MD (August 26, 2009) – Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown released the following statement today on the passing of Senator Edward M. Kennedy:
“America lost a hero today, but we have not lost sight of the dreams Senator Kennedy inspired – dreams for a brighter, healthier and more prosperous future for every American generation. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Kennedy family and it is my hope that Senator Kennedy’s legacy lives on in our hearts and through our daily efforts to leave future generations a better nation and a better world than we inherited.
“Senator Kennedy dedicated his life to improving the lives of all Americans – especially the elderly, our children, our veterans and the working poor. Because of his leadership and compassion for the wellbeing of others, millions of American children have access to health care; millions of disabled Americans have equal access to opportunity; and millions of seniors are living longer, healthier lives.
“Senator Kennedy has long carried the torch and now, in the words of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, ‘the torch has been passed to a new generation.’ My efforts to improve behavioral and mental health services for our veterans have been inspired in large part by Senator Kennedy’s dedication to improving health care for every American. As our nation renews the dialogue on healthcare in America, Senator Kennedy’s voice will not be heard but his fight, his hope and his dream lives on.”
