Lt. Governor Brown and Staff Participate in Week of Service Activities with Maryland's Senior Citizens
September 10, 2009 – Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown and members of his staff participated in several service projects today and yesterday with Maryland’s senior citizens. Today’s activities are part of Brown’s “Week of Service,” during which he will participate in service activities across the state in the days leading up to the remembrance of the September 11 attacks.
“As we approach the 8th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we are reminded of the strong and united patriotism that pulled us through the grief and tragedy. Millions of citizens placed their country before themselves and stepped up in their communities to help our vulnerable neighbors. This week, we will continue to give back to our neighbors and lend a hand to those who have given us strength throughout the years,” Lt. Governor Brown said.
On Wednesday evening, Lt. Governor Brown visited Oak Crest Village in Parkville to participate in the senior center’s Peanut Butter & Jelly Initiative, a program the facility introduced in January 2008 to help feed the hungry across Baltimore. Lt. Governor Brown and members of his staff joined seniors to make sandwiches that will be donated to the Maryland Food Bank for distribution to
shelters across the Baltimore region.
This morning, Brown made a visit to Our Daily Bread in Baltimore City where he was joined by Maryland Department of Aging Secretary Gloria Lawlah to serve breakfast to homeless seniors. Our Daily Bread, a program operated by Catholic Charities of Baltimore, serves more than a quarter million meals to hungry individuals in Baltimore City each year.
Following his visit to Our Daily Bread, Lt. Governor Brown and his staff spent time with seniors at Sandtown Winchester Senior Center in West Baltimore. Joined by John Stewart, the Executive Director of the Baltimore City Commission on Aging and Retirement Education (CARE), the Lt. Governor distributed information and school supplies to seniors who care for their grandchildren. The 5-year-old Sandtown Winchester Senior Center has a membership of about 300 seniors and provides meals, social programs, recreational activities, health programs, trips and employment assistance to its members.
Brown will conclude his Week of Service tomorrow in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. He will begin his day in Bladensburg for a memorial ceremony marking the anniversary of the September 11 attacks followed by an event in Rockville with Rebuilding Together Montgomery County, where Lt. Governor Brown and his staff will help sand and paint picnic tables.
