“We ask a great deal of our military families and our veterans and for that we owe them a debt of gratitude. When we saw men and women falling through the cracks of a large and out dated federal VA system, we didn’t point fingers. We chose to act.”

–Lt. Governor Brown

2009 Legislative Accomplishments

  • Expanded the scope and eligibility of the current Military Personnel and Service-Disabled Veterans No-Interest Loan Program by providing financial assistance for other necessary expenses incurred by a service-disabled veteran or a business owned by a service-disabled veteran.
  • Broadened behavioral health care options for veterans by expanding the definition of a veteran, allowing direct short-term behavioral health services to more veterans throughout the State.
  • Included Maryland as a member of the interstate compact which enables states to collaborate to ensure that the various educational needs of military children are met while they are transferring between school districts and states.
