BLADENSBURG, MD (January 28, 2008) – Governor Martin O'Malley today, joined by Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson, visited students at the newly renovated Bladensburg High School to highlight school construction funding for Prince George's County.
“We must continue to protect the priorities of the people of Maryland, including protecting investments in public education and school construction,” said Governor O'Malley. “Bladensburg High School has been an institution of learning for Maryland's families for over 200 years, and we owe to the students of Bladensburg, and all of our schools, to provide them with updated and modern schools where they can learn.”
With the FY 2009 budget’s historical $333 million investment in K-12 education and school construction, Governor O'Malley has allocated over $20 million in school construction funds for Prince George's County. Additional school construction dollars will be awarded to each county after Wednesday’s Board of Public Works meeting.
“We have taken positive proactive steps to build upon the success of our educational system in Prince George's County,” said County Executive Johnson. “This substantial investment from the State is essential to maintaining our quality of life in Prince George's while continuing to strengthen the partnership between the State and local governments.”
During their visit, Governor O'Malley and County Executive Johnson stopped by the school wellness center which provides a wide array of health services for students, including dental care, an AP biology class, and a nursing class where one student even took the Governor’s blood pressure.
