Statement by Governor Martin O'Malley on NCAA Tournament

Annapolis, MD (March 18, 2008) – Governor Martin O'Malley issued the following statement today congratulating all of the Maryland colleges and universities participating in post-season basketball tournaments:

“Congratulations to all of the colleges and universities from Maryland that were selected to participate in post season basketball tournaments.  Our entire State is proud of our colleges and universities competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament and the National Invitational Tournament (NIT).

First, I want to congratulate the University of Maryland’s Lady Terps for their outstanding season and a No.1 seed in the women’s NCAA bracket.  We look forward to their match-up on Sunday with Coppin State University’s Lady Eagles – who captured another MEAC conference title.

Congratulations to Coppin State University and Mount Saint Mary’s College on winning their conference titles and being selected as the two teams to officially tip off March Madness 2008.

The University of Maryland Baltimore County qualified for its first ever NCAA tournament with an exciting win to capture the North East Conference title, and we look forward to their game against Georgetown later this week.

Morgan State University men’s team is able to continue their great season by competing in the NIT as will Gary Williams’ men’s Maryland team, taking on the University of Minnesota, coached by Maryland native, “Tubby” Smith.

Without question, teams from Maryland colleges and universities will impact the 2008 post season tournament fields. As proud fans, we will loudly cheer them on.”
