Governor Martin O'Malley Appoints Federal Facility Advisory Board Members
ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 11, 2010) –As part of today’s CyberMaryland Summit at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, Governor Martin O’Malley announced the members of the newly created Federal Facilities Advisory Board. Working in concert with the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED), the 16-member Board will develop a comprehensive assessment of how Maryland can best support and leverage the vast potential of its more than 50 federal facilities and help connect Maryland companies with federal opportunities to create jobs.
“Maryland’s federal facilities are the powerful yet often underestimated economic engines that are driving our knowledge-based economy and helping us outperform most states and the nation,” said Governor O’Malley. “The potential of our federal facilities like NIST, which employs more than 2,500 people, are limitless. I am looking forward to working with this extremely talented and knowledgeable Board to help support these facilities and identify and maximize new opportunities for Maryland businesses so they can create jobs and improve our communities.”
As one of its first charges, the Board will work to advance the recommendations of the CyberMaryland report, which Governor O’Malley unveiled earlier today to position Maryland as a national leader in addressing the growing cyber security threat.
In addition to connecting Maryland businesses with federal opportunities, the Board will also help to identify ways that the State can support and enhance federal facilities’ infrastructure, education and workforce needs and help to facilitate the commercialization of the innovative technology being created at federal and military labs. Chairing the Commission will be Kevin F. Kelly, vice president of Van Scoyoc Associates Inc. and COO of Van Scoyoc Kelly PLLC.
“Maryland’s continued economic progress calls for a stronger partnership between our federal facilities, the State Government, our Congressional Delegation and the private sector to realize the full potential of our unique competitive advantage,” said Board Chair Kevin F. Kelly. “The Board will focus on fostering greater interaction and collaboration between these partners so that we all may grow and benefit.”
“The Federal Facilities Advisory Board will help Maryland to harness the tremendous growth opportunities from our federal partners, enabling us to support and create well-paying jobs that keep our nation strong, smart and sustainable,” said Secretary Christian S. Johansson. “I look forward to working in partnership with the Board to build on the innovation and uniqueness of our federal facilities and help strengthen their economic value to our region.”
Maryland is home to more than 50 federal facilities, which employ more than 100,000 well-educated, highly-skilled government employees and contractors in areas such as space exploration, cutting-edge research and development and scientific, medical and technological innovations. In total, Maryland’s federal facilities contribute an estimated $16 billion to the State’s economy. In addition, Maryland’s 12 military installations employ 90,000 civilian and military workers statewide, not counting the estimated 60,000 jobs coming to Maryland as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure process.
