Governor Martin O'Malley Sends Off Ravens on Their Way to Indianapolis
New England lobsters to display for Ravens fans during Indy game
ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 15, 2010) –Governor Martin O’Malley met with the team and coaching staff this afternoon at BWI Thurgood Marshall airport, moments before the team boarded the plane to head to Indianapolis for this weekend’s second round NLF Playoffs game against the Colts. Continuing a long tradition of visiting the team before playoffs games, Governor O’Malley wished the team well, and reminded them what happened the last time an overconfident, overrated team met the underdog Ravens.
Last week, Governor O’Malley bet on a Ravens victory with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, putting up Maryland Crab Cakes vs. New England Lobsters. Our winning lobsters will arrive tomorrow and will be released to the care of the National Aquarium in Baltimore, who will transport them to Max’s on Broadway, a popular spot for fans to watch the game, where they will be on display for the duration of the Ravens victory Saturday evening.
Max’s on Broadway will arrange a live lobster-web-cam for fans to view the crustaceans during the game at www.maxs.com. During the game, Max’s will auction off the lobsters live online to raise money for the Maryland Food Bank.
“Baltimore gave the world two of the greatest American football teams – teams that play hard, hit hard, and know what it takes to win. It’s good to see one of those teams still living up to that legacy,” said Governor O’Malley. “We’ll be watching the Ravens deliver the same fate to the Colts as they did to the Patriots last week, and we’ll be joined by the lobsters we won from Governor Patrick as a reminder of what our Ravens think of being called ‘underdogs.’”
Yesterday, Governor O’Malley and Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels agreed on a friendly wager on the outcome of Saturday’s game. If the Colts win, Maryland will send Governor Daniels Maryland Crab Cakes and Smith Island Cake from Smith Island Baking Company. When the Ravens win, Governor Daniels will send along St. Elmo’s shrimp cocktail (whatever that is), and Mrs. Wick’s Sugar Cream Pie. The Governors also agreed to a final term: the losing Governor will fly the pennant of the winning team on his vehicle for the following week.
“After the victory over the Patriots, we’re now melting the butter for our lobster feast,” said Max’s owner Ron Furman. “I can’t wait to see what’s on the menu after we beat the Colts Saturday night.”
Governor O’Malley requested the State Capitol dome be lit in purple all week, and also ordered the official state website continue its Ravens Purple theme, to honor the team and show the state’s support in their quest for the Super Bowl.
The Baltimore Ravens face the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday at 8:15pm for the second round of the NFL playoffs.
