Statement from Governor Martin O'Malley on the 25th Anniversary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday

ANNAPOLIS, MD (January 17, 2011)–Governor Martin O’Malley issued this statement today on the 25th Anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday:

“Today, we honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On the 25th Anniversary of our nation’s federal holiday - in a world where there is still senseless violence and suffering - we salute a man whose principles and beliefs remain timeless.”

“Dr. King believed in community service and giving of ourselves to help others. Especially in these trying times, we need the strength of our neighbors to help us find hope and uplift one another. This year, Katie, Lt. Governor Brown and I are participating in several service events throughout the state to honor Dr. King. We encourage all Marylanders to volunteer their time and talents to help those in need.”

“Dr. King’s remarkable legacy is a blueprint for us all to follow. If we choose to lead by example, then our children can choose to build a better future. Together, we will honor Dr. King, not just today, but every day by caring for each other, recognizing the dignity in every individual, and the human spirit that connects us all.”
